TEF — Test d'évaluation de français

The Test d'évaluation de français is a score-based test used most often for Canadian immigration — where French points can matter a great deal — and accepted by some institutions for admission.

Where TEF is the right choice

  • Canadian permanent residence, where French ability carries points in several programmes.
  • Canadian citizenship, where a French result can satisfy the language requirement.
  • Some French institutions, though DELF and TCF are more usual there.

For a student heading to France rather than Canada, TCF or DELF is normally the better fit. The reverse holds for anyone whose plan runs through Quebec.
