Who it is for
- Teaching French as a foreign language.
- Translation and interpreting.
- A small number of language-centred academic programmes.
- Senior professional roles conducted in French.
For almost every applicant to a French university, C1 is the ceiling that matters and B2 is the usual requirement. Pursuing C2 for a course asking B2 spends months for no admissions benefit.
What the exam looks like
C2 is structured differently from the levels below: the papers combine skills rather than testing them separately, with a long listening-and-writing task and a long reading-and-speaking task. It is as much a test of synthesis and argument as of language.
Before booking C2, confirm what your target programme asks for. The requirement is almost always B2 or C1.
C2 — FAQs
2 questions
Very rarely. B2 is the norm and C1 the maximum for most programmes.
It combines skills into two long papers rather than testing four separately.
