Study in South Korea with Scholarships

The Global Korea Scholarship is run by the Korean government and covers tuition, airfare, Korean language training and a monthly allowance. The government lists 76 universities for graduate study and 69 for undergraduate, with 2,000 graduate places and 286 undergraduate places each cycle.

  • Tuition, airfare, language training and a monthly allowance
  • Graduate applications open in February
  • We check your profile against the official criteria — free

Every figure on this page is read from Study in Korea, run by National Institute for International Education (NIIED), Government of the Republic of Korea — checked 29 Oct 2026.

What the scholarship covers

Four benefits, named by the government

Tuition Paid to the university for the length of your degree.
Airfare Named as a GKS benefit for award holders.
Korean language training One year before your degree, on the tracks that include it.
Monthly allowance A living allowance paid for the duration of the award.

The government names these four categories and does not publish the amounts on its scholarship page, so you will not find a stipend figure here. Anyone quoting you an exact monthly number for GKS is reading it from somewhere other than the official source. We confirm the current figures in the live GKS notice with you, free, before you plan around them.

Where you can apply

43 South Korean universities

An Embassy Track applicant names up to three universities, and at least one must be Type B. That single rule decides most shortlists, so it is the first thing to filter on.

No university matches every filter. and start from the full list of 43.

Type A and Type B are read from the official GKS lists, which differ between the undergraduate and graduate schemes — switch the level above and the badges change. A university marked not on the GKS list may still admit you and may run its own scholarship; it simply does not appear on the government's list for that level. We do not yet publish tuition for these universities: Korean institutions publish fees per semester, mostly in Korean-language PDFs, and we only print a fee once we have read it on the university's own page.

Questions worth asking first

Is the Global Korea Scholarship actually fully funded?

The Korean government names four benefit categories for GKS award holders: tuition, airfare, Korean language training fees and a monthly allowance. It does not publish the amounts on its scholarship page, so we do not print a stipend figure. Treat any site quoting you an exact monthly number as quoting something other than the official source, and check the live GKS notice before you budget.

When can I apply for 2027?

The graduate scheme is the next one open: the government publishes an announcement in February, applications in February and March, review from April to June and results in June. The undergraduate round runs the other half of the year — announced in September, with results in December. Those are months, not dates; the exact days appear in each cycle's GKS notice.

Are Indian students eligible?

The published nationality rule is that you and both of your parents must hold non-Korean citizenship, and nothing in it excludes Indian applicants. The portal does not publish a country list on its scholarship page, and places are allocated per country in each cycle's notice, so the honest answer is that eligibility is open and the quota for India is something we check in the current notice with you rather than guess.

What is the difference between a Type A and a Type B university?

They are the government's own two lists of participating universities. An Embassy Track applicant may name up to three universities and at least one of them must be Type B. The lists are not the same for the undergraduate and graduate schemes, so a university can be Type A for a master's and absent from the undergraduate list entirely — KAIST is exactly that. The finder on this page lets you switch level and watch the badges change.

Do I need to speak Korean?

GKS includes a year of Korean language training before your degree on the tracks that carry it. The exception is the graduate Global Network specialisation, which is taught mainly in English and has no language-training year. Individual universities set their own admission requirements on top of that, and we check the ones that apply to your shortlist.

Why does Vibedu not show tuition fees for Korean universities?

Because we have not read them on the universities' own pages yet. Korean institutions publish fees per semester, usually in Korean-language PDFs, and a check of the ten highest-ranked on 29 October 2026 could read an official figure for only two. We would rather show you no fee than a fee we cannot stand behind, and we are working through the list.
