We haven't confirmed this year's application window, and these dates move every cycle — so we won't print one. The official page is the only reliable source. Ask us and we'll track it for you and tell you when it opens.
Eligibility
This one is for Indian citizens specifically, and it is an undergraduate award despite how it is often described. You must be under 20 on 1 April of the intake year (the 2025 call used 1 April 2025) and unmarried, with at least 80% aggregate in your HSC — or SSC if you are still sitting HSC — from the CBSE or ICSE board, which excludes state board candidates as written. You also need JLPT N3, though Mitsui says N4 with N3 in progress may be considered on demonstrated proficiency. Two students are selected a year, so treat this as a long shot run in parallel with MEXT rather than a plan.
Mitsui announces the call annually and it is publicised through the Study in Japan site. The commitment is 5.5 years: eighteen months of Japanese language school first, then four years of undergraduate study at a Japanese university of your choice. Established in 2024 to build India–Japan links, so this is a young programme with very few places rather than a long-running scheme with a known hit rate.
Up to ¥6 million per student per year towards university tuition and the language school, for two students selected each year. Confirm the current value on the official page before you apply.
