We haven't confirmed this year's application window, and these dates move every cycle — so we won't print one. The official page is the only reliable source. Ask us and we'll track it for you and tell you when it opens.
Eligibility
The research category covers master's, doctoral and non-degree research study, and is the route most Indian postgraduate applicants use. You must hold a nationality other than Japanese, be in good health, and have graduated from a university or completed sixteen years of schooling. The age limit is applied as a date of birth — for the 2027 intake, born on or after 2 April 1992, which is the under-35 rule as a cut-off. The first screening happens at the Japanese diplomatic mission in the country whose citizenship you choose.
Two screenings, and the first is the embassy's: documents, a written examination and an interview, conducted by the Japanese mission in your country, with only successful candidates recommended on to MEXT. Securing a prospective academic supervisor in Japan strengthens the application materially, and that contact is made by you rather than arranged for you.
