What changed
Ireland's Immigration Service Delivery (Department of Justice) increased the minimum funds a student must demonstrate for a study permission. From 30 June 2025, students on a course of one year or longer must show access to €10,000 for the first year (plus course fees for subsequent years). For courses of 6-8 months, the requirement is €833 per month. The change was published on 24 March 2025, giving roughly 90 days' notice.
Who it affects
The measure removes the earlier gap between visa-required and non-visa-required nationals. Visa-required students (which includes most Indian students) already had to show €10,000; the reform standardised the figure across all non-EEA students by raising the non-visa figure from €7,000. Tuition fees must generally be paid before applying.
What it means for students
Indian applicants should budget for the €10,000 maintenance figure on top of tuition when preparing bank statements. Funds should be genuine, stable and accessible, as authorities scrutinise the source and any large last-minute deposits.
