What changed
On 1 June 2024 Germany introduced the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) under its Skilled Immigration Act. It allows non-EU nationals to enter Germany to look for a job locally for up to 12 months without a prior employment contract. Applicants qualify either as recognised skilled workers or through a points-based system requiring a minimum number of points, awarded for qualifications, work experience, language skills, age and connection to Germany.
What it means for students
For Indian students, the Opportunity Card is a relevant post-study pathway to remain in Germany and search for skilled employment, and can also be used by graduates who have completed a recognised qualification. Card holders may work part-time (up to 20 hours a week) and take short trial jobs while searching. Financial proof of support is required for the stay.
