GMAT Focus: three sections, and Data Insights is the new one

Quant, Verbal and Data Insights, 45 minutes each, 205–805 — and you can bookmark and edit three answers per section.

GMAT Focus Edition runs about two hours fifteen: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights, 45 minutes each, with a total score from 205 to 805. You may take the sections in any order you choose on the day.

Data Insights is the section people under-prepare. It combines data sufficiency with table analysis, graphics interpretation, multi-source reasoning and two-part analysis — reading evidence across tabs and charts and deciding what can be concluded. It is a third of your score and it is the section least like anything in an Indian engineering or commerce degree.

Data sufficiency is not asking you to solve. It asks whether the statements are ENOUGH to answer. The discipline is to stop the moment sufficiency is established rather than finishing the arithmetic, and the classic error is choosing "both statements together" when one alone was enough.

Quant has no geometry in the Focus edition, and no calculator. It is problem solving: algebra, arithmetic, word problems, rates and ratios, tested for reasoning speed.

Verbal is reading comprehension and critical reasoning only — sentence correction was removed in the Focus edition, which matters if you are studying from older material. Critical reasoning is the high-yield area: strengthen, weaken, assumption, flaw. Learn to name the question type before you read the options.

Bookmark and edit. You may bookmark any question and change up to three answers per section at the end. That is a real tool and it changes pacing: move on from a stuck question, bookmark it, and come back with whatever time remains rather than burning four minutes in the moment.

Check the edition of every book and course you buy. A great deal of GMAT material still on sale prepares for the retired format.

Do this now

Five to ten minutes. This is the part that moves your band.

Take five data-sufficiency questions and, for each, write down the moment you knew sufficiency was settled — before finishing the calculation. If you solved all five fully, you are spending time the test does not ask for.
