DELF, DALF or TCF — which certificate your university wants

Three French certificates with different lifespans and different purposes. One of them expires.

8 min read

France is a growing destination for Indian students, and its language certificates confuse people in a way that costs time and money.

DELF and DALF are diplomas from the French Ministry of Education, awarded at a fixed CEFR level and valid for life. DELF covers A1 to B2; DALF covers C1 and C2. You choose the level before you sit it, and you either reach that level or you do not.

TCF is a test, not a diploma. You sit one exam and it places you on a level from A1 to C2 by how you perform — and the result is valid for two years. Some universities and the visa and residency routes specify TCF particularly, often the TCF-DAP version for first-year undergraduate admission.

Which to take. Read the programme page for the exact certificate name and level. If a programme accepts either, DELF/DALF is usually the better investment because it never expires — unless the application specifically names TCF or TCF-DAP, in which case the diploma will not be accepted in its place.

Typical levels. Around B2 for most French-taught bachelor's and master's programmes; B1 is sometimes enough for a pathway or foundation year; C1 for demanding programmes and for anything clinical. English-taught programmes in France may require no French for admission at all — but A2/B1 is commonly needed later for residence purposes, and for living there at all.

What Vibedu holds today. This guide. There is no French question bank here yet, and no French listening audio; the module is a format guide and honest signposting until content exists.

Do this now

Five to ten minutes. This is the part that moves your band.

Open the admission page of a French programme you are considering and write down the certificate name, the level, and whether a per-skill minimum applies. Then check the next test date in your city — DELF sessions are few and book out months ahead.
