The dMAT is the digital Master Test: a standardised academic aptitude test for master's applicants, developed by German universities with g.a.s.t. It is nothing to do with medicine, and a great deal of what circulates about it in India is about a different exam entirely.
Why it matters now. From 2026 the dMAT is an additional required element of the APS documentation for Indian graduates. APS India will not issue your APS certificate until the dMAT certificate has been submitted and the result checked — and without an APS certificate a German master's application does not proceed. It has gone from not existing to being a gate on the whole route.
Who has to take it. In the introductory phase the requirement applies to applicants whose previous degree is in one of three areas:
- Engineering
- Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics
- Business / Management
and who are applying for a German master's from the summer semester 2027 intake or later.
Who does not. You are exempt if you completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026, or shipped your complete APS documents before that date, or have already received your APS certificate for that procedure. A winter semester 2026/27 master's intake is outside the requirement. If your degree is a mixed or borderline subject, APS India publishes the official list of affected fields — read the list rather than guessing from the name of your degree.
What it is not. The dMAT does not replace APS document verification, and it does not replace recognition of your degree. Check your university and your degree in anabin before you register for anything: a degree that does not clear anabin is a problem the dMAT cannot solve.
Where the current dates and centres are. The first administration in India ran on 26 September 2026, with registration closing on 15 September and certificates issued on 12 October. Later dates are published by g.a.s.t., who run registration, payment, test-centre booking and the certificate — not APS India, and not us. Centres so far are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune, with Berlin and Kathmandu outside India.
