What an SOP is — and what admissions committees look for
An SOP answers three linked questions: Why this subject? Why are you prepared for it? Why this university, and what next? Committees are not looking for a life story or a list of achievements already on your CV. They want to understand your motivation and judge whether you will succeed in and contribute to their programme.
Strong SOPs share a few traits:
- A clear, specific reason for choosing the course — not "I have always been passionate about it."
- Evidence, not adjectives — a project, an internship, a problem you solved.
- A genuine link between your background and the specific programme's modules or faculty.
- Realistic, believable career goals.

The single biggest upgrade you can make is replacing claims with evidence. Compare:
- Weak (telling): "I am extremely passionate about data science and a hard-working, dedicated student."
- Strong (showing): "In my final year I built a model to predict local bus demand in Coimbatore, cleaning 40,000 rows of messy data — the experience showed me I wanted to work with real-world datasets, not just textbooks."
The second version proves passion without ever using the word. Apply this everywhere:
- For every adjective you want to use (curious, dedicated, analytical), delete it and instead describe an action that demonstrates it.
- Quantify where you can — rows of data, users, marks improved, funds raised.

Mistakes that get SOPs rejected
Most weak SOPs fail for the same handful of reasons. Avoid these and you are already ahead:
- Generic and reusable: An SOP that could be sent to any university signals no real interest. Customise the "why this university" section for each application.
- Repeating your CV: Listing grades and titles wastes space. Interpret your experiences instead.
