Education loans from public sector banks
Public sector banks are the cheapest education lenders in India and the slowest. That trade is worth taking when you have collateral and time, and it is the wrong trade when your offer arrived in July for an August intake.
What you get and what it costs you
| PSU bank | NBFC | |
|---|---|---|
| Rate | Lowest available | Materially higher |
| Speed | Weeks, driven by valuation | Days to a couple of weeks |
| Unsecured appetite | Limited | Larger |
| Process | Branch-led and paper-heavy | Centralised, often digital |
| Flexibility on profile | Less | More |
Across fifteen years the rate difference is the largest number in this table. It is also the one that feels least urgent in the week an admission deadline is approaching, which is exactly why families end up paying it.
Making a PSU application work
- Start the property documents first. Title and valuation are what actually set the timeline.
- Apply at the branch where the family banks, which moves a file faster than anything else available to you.
- Take a complete file the first time — each return trip costs days you do not have.
- Ask about the preferred institution list, because the best pricing usually sits there.
Three months is enough for a PSU loan. Six weeks usually is not, and that is the honest line to plan around.

Public sector banks publish the lowest bands. What you are offered depends on security, co-applicant and institution, so compare written offers rather than advertised floors.
Usually weeks, and collateral valuation rather than the credit decision is what sets it.
Not sure which lender fits? A counsellor compares what you would actually be offered across all twelve — free, and with no application.
