What the range covers, and what it does not
A living-cost figure covers accommodation, food, local transport and day-to-day expenses. It does not cover tuition, the visa fee, flights, health cover where that is charged separately, or the one-off costs of arriving — a deposit, bedding, a phone plan, winter clothing.
- Accommodation is most of it, and it is the line that varies most within a country.
- The capital is not the country. A national average understates the largest city and overstates everywhere else.
- Your first month costs more, because deposits and setup land before any routine settles.
Budgeting in rupees
Converting at today's rate tells you what it costs today. Across a two-year course the rupee can move enough to matter, and a budget built on one rate is a budget with no margin in it.
- Work out the annual cost at the current rate: roughly ₹141,060 to ₹235,100 a year.
- Recalculate at a rupee ten per cent weaker and check it is still affordable.
- Add tuition, which is separate and usually larger.
- Add the visa financial requirement, which is money held rather than spent.
The visa requirement and your actual spending are different numbers. See /visa-guide for what your destination asks you to evidence.
What reduces it
- University accommodation in the first year, which is usually simpler and often cheaper than a private let arranged from India.
- Sharing, which is the single largest saving available in every destination.
- Living outside the central area, where transport is good enough to make it work.
- Part-time work within your visa's permitted hours, which supplements rather than funds.
