USA Student Visa (F-1) Process for Indian Students: Step by Step

The complete F-1 student visa process for Indian students — from I-20 to the interview — plus the documents and financial proof you need.

Step 1 — Get your admission and I-20

Once a US university (a SEVP-approved school) admits you and confirms your funds, it issues a Form I-20. You cannot apply for the F-1 visa without it, so secure your admit early — ideally for the Fall intake, which has the most options.

Step 2 — Pay SEVIS and the visa fee

Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee, then the visa application (MRV) fee. Keep both receipts — you’ll need them at the interview.

Step 3 — Fill the DS-160 and book your interview

Complete the DS-160 online form carefully (errors cause delays), upload a compliant photo, and book your visa interview slot at a US consulate in India. Apply early — slots fill fast before Fall.

Step 4 — Prepare your documents

Carry your I-20, passport, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipts, admission letter, academic transcripts, test scores, and strong financial proof — bank statements, loan sanction letter and sponsor documents showing you can cover tuition and living costs.

Step 5 — The visa interview

The consular officer mainly wants to see that you’re a genuine student with the funds to study and clear intent. Be honest, concise and confident about your course choice, university and career plans. Most well-prepared students are approved on the spot.
