Universities in London: All 19, Ranked and Honest

8 min read · 16 Oct 2026 · Team Vibedu

Nineteen of the UK universities we list are in London. That is more than any other city in our catalogue by a wide margin — the next largest, Birmingham, has four — and it is why "study in London" and "study in the UK" get treated as the same decision when they are not.

They are not the same decision because London is the most expensive place to be a student in Britain, and because the nineteen institutions behind that one city name are not remotely alike.

The nineteen, by QS 2027 rank

Every rank below is the QS 2027 edition, which is the edition our catalogue currently carries. We name the edition because a bare rank cannot be checked — a reader compares it against whatever Google hands them, finds a different number, and concludes we are wrong. Usually they are reading a different year.

  • Imperial College London — QS 2
  • University College London — QS 8
  • King's College London — QS 37
  • The London School of Economics and Political Science — QS 62
  • Queen Mary University of London — QS 103
  • Brunel University of London — QS 353
  • Birkbeck, University of London — QS 354
  • City St George's, University of London — QS 361
  • SOAS University of London — QS 458
  • Kingston University, London — QS 686
  • Goldsmiths, University of London — QS 701
  • University of Greenwich — QS 791
  • University of the Arts London — QS 851
  • University of Westminster — QS 851
  • London South Bank University — QS 901
  • Middlesex University — QS 901
  • London Metropolitan University — QS 1001
  • University of East London — QS 1001
  • University of Roehampton, London — QS 1001

Read that list top to bottom and the useful fact jumps out: London contains four of the world's top 65 universities and eleven ranked below 650. "I got into a London university" says almost nothing on its own. Which one is the entire content of the sentence.

What the name "University of London" does and does not mean

Eight of the nineteen carry "University of London" in their name, and this confuses a lot of Indian applicants. The University of London is a federation — UCL, King's, Queen Mary, Birkbeck, SOAS, Goldsmiths, City St George's and others are member institutions, each admitting its own students, setting its own fees and awarding its own degrees.

Being part of the federation is not a quality signal in either direction. UCL is QS 8 and another member is outside the top 700, and both are accurately "University of London" institutions. Judge the institution, not the suffix.

The same caution applies to the word "college". In Britain a "college" can be a constituent part of a university, a further-education institution teaching pre-degree qualifications, or simply a historic name — King's College London is a university. An agent describing something as a "London college" is not telling you what it is.

The real reason to think twice about London

It is rent, and it is not a small adjustment. London accommodation is the single largest difference between studying there and studying in Birmingham, Glasgow or Newcastle, and it runs for the whole twelve months of a one-year master's rather than term-time only.

We are deliberately not printing a monthly rent figure here. Any number we typed would be out of date within a year, would vary by more between zones 1 and 4 than most articles admit, and families budget against exactly this kind of casually published figure. What we will say is the shape of it: on a one-year master's, London living costs can approach or exceed the tuition, which is not true in most of the rest of the UK.

Check the cost against the university's own published estimate — every UK university publishes one for visa purposes — and against the UKVI maintenance requirement for the year you apply, which is itself set higher for London than for elsewhere. That difference in the official requirement is the clearest statement anyone makes about the gap.

When London is worth the premium

Three cases where we think it genuinely is:

  • Finance, law and policy. Proximity matters in these fields in a way it does not in, say, mechanical engineering. LSE's position in economics and the City's proximity are real advantages, not branding.
  • Art, design and media. University of the Arts London sits at QS 851 overall and that overall number tells you almost nothing about it, because subject reputation in art and design is not what the general ranking measures.
  • You are optimising for the city, honestly. If the point is to live in London for a year, that is a legitimate reason. It is just better made on purpose than discovered in March when the money runs short.

And the case against: if your subject is computing, data science or general management — which between them are most of what Indian students in the UK study — the department outside London is often just as strong, the fee is often lower, and the rent is reliably lower.

How to use this list

Pick the subject first. Then look at which of the nineteen actually teaches it well, which is a question about the department and not about the institution's overall rank. Then price the year, with rent in it, before falling in love with a city.

Our London universities span the full range from QS 2 to outside the top 1000, and we list all nineteen rather than only the famous four, because the ones lower down the table admit a great many Indian students every year and pretending otherwise would not help anybody choose.

Ranks above are QS 2027, from our catalogue as at 16 October 2026; QS republishes annually and our pages carry the edition beside every rank. Fees and living costs are per university and per year — read them on the programme page for your intake rather than from any article.

If you want help telling the four apart from the fifteen for your particular subject, ask us. It is free, and so is everything else we do for students.
