New Zealand has eight universities in the entire country. That is the single most useful fact about studying there, and it cuts both ways.
What a small system means
There is no tier problem. With eight universities, all publicly funded and all internationally recognised, you are not navigating a long tail of institutions of uncertain quality — a question that takes real work in the USA, the UK and Australia. The shortlist is short because the sector is small.
The cost is breadth. Niche specialisations that exist in a dozen British universities may exist in one New Zealand university or none, and if that one is not a fit, there is no second option in the country.
The stay-back
New Zealand offers up to three years of post-study work depending on your qualification and where you studied. That is at the longer end of what any destination offers, and it is the main reason students choose it over Australia.
These rules are set by Immigration New Zealand and are revised; confirm the current position officially. We are a private education consultancy, not an immigration authority.
What we actually list
We publish 21 programmes across 7 institutions, 13 at master's level, in Auckland, Dunedin and Hamilton, concentrated in Computer Science, Engineering and Business & Management.
Six of those seven are universities — the University of Auckland, the University of Otago, Massey University, the University of Waikato, Victoria University of Wellington and Auckland University of Technology. The seventh, Unitec, is an institute of technology, which is a different kind of institution: vocational, applied, shorter programmes, and a different conversation about post-study work eligibility.

Where the eight universities are
Auckland holds roughly a third of the country's population and most of its corporate head offices, so it is where the graduate job market is deepest and the rent is highest. Otago, in Dunedin, is the classic campus-town experience and considerably cheaper. Wellington is the seat of government and the public-sector employer base.
In a country this size, choosing a university is largely choosing a city, and the cities are not interchangeable in cost or in what they hire for.
Who it suits
New Zealand tends to suit students who want the post-study runway and a lower-pressure environment more than they want a globally recognised university brand. It suits them less if their field is narrow, or if they need a large local job market in a specific industry — the economy is small, and the number of employers in any given niche reflects that.
It is an honest trade rather than a compromise, and students who make it deliberately are usually happy with it.
