Dubai sells itself to Indian families on proximity: a three-hour flight, a large Indian community, no culture shock, and a British or Australian degree at the end of it. Most of that is true. The part worth examining is the degree — what a branch campus actually is, and why the cheapest option we list is a master's while the most expensive is an undergraduate course.
What a branch campus actually is
A branch campus is a satellite of a foreign university operating under local licence. The award is normally identical — your certificate says University of Birmingham, not University of Birmingham Dubai. What differs is the campus, the staff, the facilities and frequently the module list, because a satellite cannot run everything the home institution does.
That is the question to put to admissions directly: which modules on this degree are not available here, and who teaches it? A good branch campus answers it plainly. The answer is more useful than any ranking.
Two kinds of institution, and the price gap is fourfold
We list 30 programmes across seven institutions — 17 bachelor's and 13 master's, all priced in dirhams — and they divide cleanly.

From AED 36,000 to AED 156,718 is a fourfold spread, and the two ends are not the same product. Birmingham Dubai at the top charges close to what its UK campus charges international students. Middlesex and Wollongong sit at roughly half that for the same structural promise of a foreign award.
One honest note on the label. Three of these are not in Dubai at all — Khalifa is in Abu Dhabi, UAE University in Al Ain, and the American University of Sharjah in Sharjah. We file them under Dubai because that is how students search, but if commute or city matters to you, check the campus location rather than the country label.
The cheapest degree here is a master's, and the dearest is a bachelor's
Everywhere else in our catalogue a master's costs more than an undergraduate degree at the same institution. In the UAE the ends of the range invert, and it is worth seeing the two side by side:
- Cheapest: MSc Information Technology Management and MSc Electrical Engineering at United Arab Emirates University — AED 36,000 a year
- Dearest: Computer Science BSc at University of Birmingham Dubai — AED 156,718 a year, over three years
The annual gap is 4.4 times. Across the whole qualification it is wider still, because the expensive one runs longer. A three-year Birmingham Dubai BSc at that rate is a materially larger commitment than a UAE University master's, and the two campuses are a few hours apart by road.
The explanation is not mysterious: UAE public universities are state-funded institutions with subsidised fee structures, and branch campuses are commercial operations that price against their home market. But it does mean you cannot reason about cost in the UAE from the level of the degree. Check the institution first.
On length, the bachelor's degrees we list run three years in 13 cases and four in 4. The master's are spread — 4 run twelve months, 3 run eighteen, and 6 run a full two years. That spread is the second thing to check, because a two-year master's at a branch-campus fee is a different proposition from a one-year one at the same annual rate.
What is taught here
The catalogue is concentrated: engineering and computing dominate, with seven engineering programmes and around a dozen across computer science, IT, data science, cyber security and artificial intelligence. Business, finance and analytics make up most of the rest, with one law degree.
If your subject is outside engineering, computing or business, there may simply be no UAE option in our catalogue that fits — check the subject pages rather than assuming. We have the published English requirement recorded on 27 of the 30 programmes.
Where Dubai genuinely wins
Total cost, when you count living. An Indian student in the UAE usually spends less on food, travel and family visits than one in London or Sydney, and the flight home is a few hours and a few thousand rupees rather than a major expense. On a multi-year degree that gap is substantial.
Working while studying is normal. The UAE economy employs a very large Indian workforce, and part-time work alongside study is well established rather than exceptional.
Proximity for families. For a student who is the first in the family to study abroad, or whose parents want to visit without a visa ordeal, this is not a small factor — and it is the reason most UAE decisions actually get made.
Where it does not
Permanent settlement is not the model. The UAE's residency system is employment-linked, and your right to stay is generally tied to holding a job. There is no equivalent to the UK Graduate Route, Canadian PR pathways or Australian permanent residency. Immigration and work rules are set by the UAE authorities, not by any university or consultancy, and they change. No one can guarantee an outcome under them. Confirm the current position on official UAE government channels before you plan around staying.
Ranking and research depth. A branch campus is primarily a teaching operation. If your plan runs toward a PhD or a research career, the home campus is a different proposition and you should compare the two directly rather than assuming equivalence.
The fee is not always the saving people expect. Birmingham Dubai at AED 156,718 is roughly £33,000 a year. Against a UK campus that is a modest discount at best, and once you account for a UK master's finishing in twelve months, the arithmetic can reverse entirely. Who it suits
Dubai and the wider UAE work best for a student who wants a recognisable foreign degree while staying close to home, at a cost that leaves the family's savings intact, and whose career plan runs through the Gulf or back to India rather than through settlement abroad. The UAE public universities are the genuine value here and the ones most students overlook.
It works least well for someone whose real goal is permanent residency somewhere, because the UAE does not offer that route and no amount of study there creates one.
