Study in Australia for Indian Students: Work Rights, the Group of Eight and the Real Cost

7 min read · 21 Sep 2026 · updated 05 Oct 2026 · Team Vibedu

Australia's pitch to Indian students rests on two things that are genuinely distinctive: the right to work substantial hours during your degree, and a post-study work visa whose length scales with your qualification.

Work rights during study

This matters more than it sounds. In most destinations, part-time work is a small offset against living costs. In Australia it can be a material part of the budget, which changes which offers are affordable for a student without family funding behind them.

The permitted hours are set by the Australian government and have been revised more than once in recent years, so take the current limit from the official source rather than from a figure in a blog post. What is stable is the principle: Australia expects students to work, and the system is built around it.

The Group of Eight, and whether it matters

Australia's research-intensive universities are grouped as the Go8 — Melbourne, Sydney, ANU, Queensland, UNSW, Monash, Western Australia and Adelaide. They carry the rankings and the research funding.

Whether that matters depends on what you want. For a research path or a globally portable brand, it does. For a vocational master's aimed at the Australian job market, a strong regional university with industry links and lower fees frequently serves better — and regional study has had its own incentives attached at various times.

What we actually list

We publish 29 programmes across 6 Australian universities, 15 at master's level, in Canberra, Ballarat and Sydney, concentrated in Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology.

Those six make the Go8 question concrete. Australian National University and UNSW Sydney are Group of Eight. University of Technology Sydney, Deakin University, the University of Canberra and Federation University Australia are not — and that is not a ranking of usefulness. UTS is strongly placed for technology and design in a major city; Federation and Canberra sit outside the two most expensive housing markets in the country, which changes the total cost of the degree more than most tuition differences do.

The visa is a judgement, not a checklist

Australia's student visa includes an assessment of whether you intend to study rather than to migrate — a genuine-student test applied to your statement, your academic history and the coherence of your plan. A course that does not follow from your previous degree, or a gap you cannot explain, is the kind of thing it weighs.

This is why a copy-paste statement of purpose is a worse idea here than almost anywhere. The rules are set by the Australian government and change; confirm the current requirements officially rather than from any consultancy's summary, ours included. Vibedu is a private education consultancy, not a visa authority.

The two things that decide affordability

  • City. Sydney and Melbourne are materially more expensive to live in than Adelaide, Canberra or a regional campus. The tuition gap between universities is often smaller than the living-cost gap between cities.
  • Health cover. Overseas Student Health Cover is mandatory for the length of your visa and is a real line in the budget, not a formality.

Our cost-of-living comparison sets Australia beside the other destinations.

Intakes

Australia runs on a southern-hemisphere calendar: the main intake is February, with a substantial July intake. That is worth planning around — a February start means applying through the middle of the previous year, which is out of step with the UK and US cycle most students are tracking.
