MBBS in Kazakhstan for Indian Students: What to Verify

5 min read · 14 Oct 2026 · Team Vibedu

Kazakhstan has grown fast as an MBBS destination for Indian students on a straightforward proposition: lower fees than Georgia or Russia, English-medium programmes, direct flights, and no entrance exam beyond NEET.

There is no NMC alert naming Kazakhstan. There is something adjacent to one, though, and it is the most useful thing on this page.

What NMC said about “similar destinations”

On 1 April 2026, NMC's Under-Graduate Medical Education Board issued an alert about undergraduate medical admissions in Uzbekistan, naming several institutions. The concerns were enrolment beyond intake capacity, a lack of hands-on clinical training because the medium of instruction was not English, violations of NMC regulations, and alleged malpractice by admission agents.

The wording of the advice matters. NMC asked students considering Uzbekistan and similar destinations to be extremely cautious and to satisfy themselves that the institution complies with the FMGL Regulations, 2021.

Kazakhstan was not named. But as a destination it shares the structural features the alert describes: a rapidly growing Indian intake, English-medium marketing, and clinical training in hospitals where patients speak Kazakh or Russian. Applying NMC's own test to it is not alarmism — it is what the regulator asked students to do.

No alert is not approval

It is worth being precise about what the absence of a Kazakhstan alert means. It means no alert has been issued. It does not mean the institutions have been examined and cleared, because NMC does not endorse lists of foreign medical institutions for MBBS or equivalent courses — anywhere.

So “NMC approved university in Kazakhstan” is not describing a thing that exists. When you see it, ask what was approved, by whom, and under which regulation, and expect a document.

The conditions your course must meet

Whatever the destination, these decide whether your degree can be registered in India:

  • A course of at least 54 months
  • An internship of at least 12 months at the same institution that awards the degree
  • A degree where the medium of instruction was English
  • No part of the training done in India or in a third country
  • Completion within ten years of joining

The third is where Kazakhstan needs your attention, for exactly the reason the Uzbekistan alert gives. Ask specifically about the clinical years:

  • In which language are ward rounds and clinical rotations conducted?
  • In which language do you take patient histories?
  • Is Kazakh or Russian language study compulsory, and from which year?
  • Will the university state the medium of instruction in writing, for the whole course?

A university that teaches you the local language so you can function on the wards is doing the right thing by you. A university that advertises English and will not put the medium of instruction in writing has answered the question.

Our full breakdown is in what NMC requires of an MBBS abroad.

The agent problem, named

One of the four concerns in the Uzbekistan alert was alleged malpractice by admission agents, and it is the one most likely to affect you directly — because for most students the agent is the only party they ever actually speak to.

Two practical protections, neither of which costs anything:

  • Insist on direct contact with the university. Admission letters, fee schedules and the medium-of-instruction confirmation should come from the institution, not forwarded by an intermediary.
  • Do not pay university fees into an agent's account. University fees are paid to the university.

NMC's guidance that students should obtain fee and course details directly from the university exists precisely because this layer is where things go wrong.

On the fees

Kazakhstan is positioned at the cheaper end, and that is the genuine draw. We are not publishing a fee table assembled from consultancy sites — get the full-course figure from the university in writing, then add six years of living costs, the 12-month CRMI in India, and FMGE attempts before you compare anything.

The honest summary

Kazakhstan has not been flagged, and that is genuinely worth something. It also sits squarely inside the category NMC described when it said “similar destinations”, and the regulator's instruction in that sentence was to check compliance yourself rather than assume it.

Get the medium of instruction in writing for the clinical years, deal with the university rather than only the agent, and the rest becomes an ordinary comparison of cost and fit.

If you want a specific offer checked against each FMGL condition, bring us the paperwork — our counselling is free, whether or not you ever become a client.

Alert details above are from NMC's UGMEB alert note of 1 April 2026 and NMC's published guidance, read in October 2026. Confirm the current position on nmc.org.in before acting on it.
