Is Studying Abroad Safe for Indian Students in 2027?

7 min read · 14 Oct 2026 · Team Vibedu

When a parent asks whether studying abroad is safe, they usually mean: will my child be physically safe. It is a fair question and it deserves a straight answer rather than a brochure.

The straight answer has two parts. On physical safety, we are not going to quote you crime statistics, because the honest comparison is city to city rather than country to country, and because figures circulated in study-abroad articles are rarely traceable to anything. What we can do is point you at the things that are checkable, and then spend most of this page on the risks that actually derail Indian students — which are not the ones families worry about.

On physical safety, what is worth doing

Read your own government's advice, not a consultancy's. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs publishes travel advisories, and every destination's own police or government site publishes local crime data by area. A university's accommodation office will tell you which neighbourhoods its students live in and why.

Three practical things carry more weight than any ranking:

  • Live in university accommodation for the first year if you can. It is vetted, it is near campus, and it removes the single largest source of trouble: an unverified private rental arranged from India.
  • Register with the Indian embassy or high commission once you arrive. It takes minutes and it is how you get help if something goes wrong.
  • Know the health cover you have. The UK charges a health surcharge upfront that buys NHS access. Dubai requires health insurance by law. Others require nothing and leave you exposed. This is a cost question and a safety question at the same time.

The risks that actually cost students their plans

The applications and first years that go wrong usually do so for reasons families never worried about. These are the ones worth planning against.

1. Rules changed and nobody told the student

This is the biggest one right now, and 2027 entrants are affected by two changes already in force.

The UK Graduate Route is getting shorter. It currently gives most graduates two years to stay and work without a job offer. For applications made from 1 January 2027 it drops to 18 months. If your financial plan assumed two post-study years to recover the fees, that plan now has six months less in it. PhD graduates keep three years.

Australia changed its Student visa rules on 2 October 2026, affecting who can apply for or be granted a visa while already in Australia, and whether family members can be included in an application. Advice written before October 2026 is describing a system that no longer exists.

Germany added a test. From the summer 2027 intake, master's applicants from engineering, commerce, finance, economics, business and management backgrounds must sit the dMAT as part of APS. Miss it and the APS certificate — and therefore the visa — does not issue.

The lesson is not that rules change. It is that most of the advice you will read was written for a different year. Check the date on everything, including this page.

2. The part-time earnings arithmetic

A great many plans assume part-time work will cover living costs. The legal limits make that arithmetic tight:

  • UK: 20 hours a week in term time, full-time in official holidays
  • Australia: 48 hours a fortnight while the course is in session
  • Germany: 140 full days or 280 half days a year

Those are caps, not guarantees of work. A budget that only balances if you find a job on arrival is not a budget. This is the most common way a financially sound-looking plan fails in month four.

3. Agents who charge for what is free, or worse

Visa fees go to governments. Published government fees should never be marked up. More seriously: an agent who offers to strengthen your application with documents you did not earn, or to state something on a visa form that is not true, is exposing you to a misrepresentation finding, which can carry a multi-year ban from that country. The agent faces nothing. You carry it.

Vibedu charges students nothing, which we mention here only because it is the relevant fact: if someone is charging you, ask precisely what for.

4. Money that does not exist yet

Several countries require proof of funds before issuing a visa — Germany wants €11,904 held in a blocked account, around ₹12.9 lakhs. Students routinely assemble this at the last moment from relatives, not realising the UK requires the balance held for 28 consecutive days, with the clock restarting if it dips. A funding plan that only becomes true the week before the appointment often is not true when it is checked.

So, is it safe?

For the overwhelming majority of Indian students, yes — in the ordinary sense that they complete their degree, work, and are fine. Hundreds of thousands do it every year.

But “safe” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The students who have a bad time are usually not the victims of anything dramatic. They are the ones who ran out of money in semester two, or who built a plan on a post-study work rule that changed, or who signed an accommodation contract sight unseen, or who let somebody else fill in a form on their behalf.

All four of those are avoidable in advance, which is the useful thing about them.

If you want the specific rules for your destination rather than the general case, each country's page on this site carries them with the government source attached. And our counselling is free, including the conversation where we tell you a plan does not add up.
