Computer Science in Ireland: a Two-Tier Market

7 min read · 20 Oct 2026 · Team Vibedu

We list 7 Computer Science programmes in Ireland at six universities — 4 master's and 3 bachelor's — and hold a verified tuition figure for 4 of them. It is our thinnest verification of the three Irish subjects, so treat the range below as a shape rather than a survey.

Ireland is a two-tier market, and the tiers are a long way apart

Across the four verified figures the annual tuition runs from €13,500 to €29,500, with a median of €27,790 — but the median is the least useful number here, because the list does not have a middle. It has two ends.

At the bottom sit the technological universities. Munster Technological University lists its BSc in Software Development at €13,500 and Atlantic Technological University its MSc in Computing at €14,000.

At the top sit the traditional Dublin names. Trinity College Dublin's MSc in Computer Science – Intelligent Systems is €27,790, and University College Dublin's MSc Computer Science (Conversion) is €29,500.

That is roughly double, for degrees at the same level in the same country. Ireland reorganised its technological sector into full universities in recent years, so MTU and ATU are universities rather than colleges — the distinction a student needs to weigh is research intensity, industry links and graduate recruiting access, not legal status.

Set the bottom of that range against the UK, where computer science starts at £17,000, and Ireland's technological universities look like the cheapest English-speaking option in this part of Europe that we hold.

One year for the master's

Three of the seven run 12 months and one runs 16; the three bachelor's run 48. The Irish taught master's follows the British one-year pattern rather than the two-year Canadian or Australian one, which changes the total cost more than any tuition comparison does.

One year of €14,000 tuition plus Irish living costs is a genuinely low total for an English-taught master's in Western Europe — and Dublin rent is the variable that can undo it, which is part of why the non-Dublin programmes are worth a serious look rather than a glance.

Where the 7 are

Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, Dublin City University, the University of Galway, Munster Technological University and Atlantic Technological University.

Six universities for seven programmes, and three of the seven are bachelor's, so the master's list is four. That is thin and we would rather say so. If Ireland is your plan, this page shows you the price structure and the kind of institution at each end; it is not a shortlist.

Entry requirements

Our listings record no academic cut-off for these programmes, so we will not quote one. The thing worth knowing about Irish computer science specifically is that conversion master's exist and are common — UCD's is on this list. If your bachelor's is not in computing, that is the route that exists for you, and it is a different application from a specialist MSc rather than a weaker version of one.

Staying on after: Stamp 1G

Ireland's Third Level Graduate Programme lets graduates remain and work, and the detail is worth getting right because the official sources are not phrased identically.

A Level 9 (master's) graduate gets up to 24 months. The Immigration Service's programme page describes this as 12 months, renewable for a further 12 where you can show you are actively seeking graduate-level employment; other official material describes it as a 24-month permission. Either way the ceiling is two years and the second year is not automatic. A Level 8 honours bachelor's gets 12 months.

Three conditions that catch people. You must apply within 6 months of being notified of your award, and you must hold a current Stamp 2 when you do. The fee is €300. And on Stamp 1G you may work full time but you may not be self-employed or run a business — which rules out the freelance or consulting route a lot of graduates assume is open.

Catalogue figures counted from our published listings on 20 October 2026: 4 of 7 programmes carry a tuition figure verified against the university's own page, in euro. Graduate permission durations, conditions and the fee from the Irish Immigration Service, read 20 October 2026, where the programme page and the published rules differ slightly on how the 24 months is granted.
