How to get a Canadian study permit — the letter of acceptance, GIC, proof of funds and the SDS route — explained for Indian students.
Step 1 — Letter of Acceptance
You need a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) before applying for your study permit. Choose a program that also keeps your PGWP and PR options open.
Step 2 — Proof of funds and GIC
You must prove you can pay tuition and living costs. Many students use a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of around C$20,635 as living-expenses proof — it’s returned in instalments after you arrive. See our Canada cost guide.
Step 3 — Apply for the study permit
Apply online with your acceptance letter, proof of funds, passport, photos, and (if required) medical exam and police certificate. Complete biometrics after applying.
Step 4 — After approval
You receive a Port of Entry letter and, on arrival, your study permit. From there you can work part-time and, after graduating, apply for the PGWP — read how PR works.
