We list 27 Biochemistry master's programmes in Germany. All 27 run 24 months, and 26 of the 27 are taught in English — the twenty-seventh in German and English.
That is the second German laboratory science in this series where the duration field is perfectly uniform; Biology was 24 months on all 38. The reason is the same: a lab master's is built around a research thesis the experiments schedule, and there is no compressed version because compressing it would mean doing less science.
Where the 27 are
By institution: the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (3), the University of Göttingen (2), Freie Universität Berlin (2), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (2), Technische Universität Berlin (2) and Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (2), with Cologne and others on one.
By city: Berlin (6), Landau (3), Göttingen (2), Bonn (2), Hamburg (2), Cologne (1) and Bochum (1).
Landau is a town of roughly 47,000 people in Rhineland-Palatinate. It holds three of the 27 — more than any single Berlin university. That is the third time in this series that the deepest single address has been somewhere an Indian applicant has never heard of, after Saarbrücken for Computer Science and Würzburg for Biology. If there is one habit worth taking from these pieces, it is to stop shortlisting German universities by overall rank. The subject depth sits in departments, and the departments are scattered.
The entry requirements are unusually open
Where an English requirement is recorded on our listings, the spread across these 27 is wide: some ask IELTS Academic 7.0; a middle group sits at 6.5 alongside TOEFL iBT 92, onSET C1, telc B2-C1, Cambridge C1 Advanced and UNIcert III as alternatives; and a third group accepts IELTS Academic 5.0 with TOEFL iBT 72, telc B2-C1, UNIcert II or Cambridge B2 First.
A 5.0 floor is lower than almost anything an Indian science applicant will have been shown for an English-taught master's. It is on this list, and it is worth saying clearly: an English score that closes the door on a UK or Australian science master's does not close the door on a German one.
The usual caveat applies with force. These are the requirements recorded on our listings for a stated intake, they vary programme by programme, and the programme's own page is the only version that counts. But the range is real and most people never find out it exists.
On fees, and a gap
We hold no verified tuition figure for any German programme in our catalogue, Biochemistry included — a gap we are working through rather than filling with an average nobody checked. Each listing links to the page that can answer it; the German fee structure is covered separately.
None of the 27 carries a STEM designation in our data. That field is a US construct, it is not populated for German rows, and its absence says nothing about the degree.
Who it suits
Someone heading towards research or a doctorate, who wants two genuine lab years rather than a taught year with a short project, and whose English score may have ruled them out elsewhere. That last group is larger than it should be, and this is the list that reopens the question for them.
It suits you less if you need to be earning inside eighteen months — there is no fast version of this degree anywhere in the German catalogue.
