Computer Science Master's in Germany: 69 Programmes, 63 of Them in English

8 min read · 06 Oct 2026 · Team Vibedu

Computer Science in Germany is the second-deepest subject–country pair in our catalogue: 69 published master's programmes, behind only Business Administration in Germany at 97. Every one of the 69 is a master's; we list no German CS bachelor's at present.

Two facts about that set matter more than any ranking, and both are easy to check before you apply.

63 of the 69 are taught in English

Counted from our listings, 63 are English-taught outright. Four are recorded as German and English, one as English and German. The idea that a German master's means learning German first is, for this subject, mostly wrong — Computer Science is one of the fields where German universities moved to English earliest and most completely.

That is the degree, not the country. German will matter for day-to-day life, for part-time work and for a large part of the graduate job market. But it is not a barrier to the qualification itself, and treating it as one rules out the deepest CS catalogue we hold anywhere.

63 of the 69 also take two years

Durations across the set: 24 months on 63 programmes, 18 months on 5, and 12 months on 1. A German CS master's is a two-year degree in practice, and that is the number to carry into any comparison.

Against a one-year UK master's, two years means roughly double the living costs and a later start to earning. It also means a longer thesis, more time to pick up an internship or a Werkstudent role, and a degree German employers read as the normal shape rather than a compressed one. Neither is better in the abstract. They are different bets, and the only honest way to compare them is total cost and time-to-first-salary, not the per-year figure.

Where the 69 are

By institution: Saarland University (7), Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg (4), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (3), University of Augsburg (3), Freie Universität Berlin (3), Technische Universität Berlin (3) and Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (3).

By city: Berlin (9), Saarbrücken (7), Hamburg (6), Magdeburg (4), Augsburg (3), Bonn (3) and Regensburg (3).

Saarland at the top is the one worth pausing on. Saarbrücken is not a city most Indian applicants have heard of, and Saarland University sits on a campus shared with major computer-science research institutes — it is a serious CS address that no ranking-led shortlist will surface, because the university's overall rank does not reflect the strength of that one department. Berlin's nine are spread across three different universities with three different characters, in the way they were for Business Administration too.

Entry: the English requirement, and the gap in our data

Where an English requirement is recorded on our listings, it clusters at IELTS Academic 6.5 to 7.0, with several programmes naming onSET as an alternative. It is recorded on a minority of the 69 — check the programme's own page rather than assuming a number carries across.

Two honest gaps. We hold no verified tuition figure for any of our 1,075 German programmes, CS included; we have written about how the German fee structure works separately, and each listing links to the page that can answer it for that programme. And none of the 69 carries a STEM designation in our data — that field is a US construct and is simply not populated for German rows, so read its absence as missing data rather than as a statement.

Who this suits

A German CS master's suits someone who wants depth over speed, is comfortable with two years rather than one, and is willing to learn German for the life around the degree even though the degree itself does not require it. The English coverage removes the barrier most people assume is there.

It suits you less if you need to be earning within eighteen months, or if your shortlist is being built from overall university rankings — because that method will take you past Saarland, Magdeburg and Augsburg without stopping.
