The IDR LLM programme at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is a one-year full-time postgraduate Master’s degree in International Dispute Resolution (IDR), focusing primarily on international arbitration. This programme is taught exclusively in English, providing a unique opportunity to engage with global legal practices. In today's interconnected world, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods are increasingly vital in legal practice, particularly in international contexts. Arbitration is now the preferred mechanism for resolving disputes in international trade. Our programme leads legal professionals from around the globe on a trajectory into the world of international dispute resolution. Whether it be in commercial arbitration, or investment arbitration, aspiring international lawyers will gain a pathway into the German legal market through the IDR LLM programme. Unlike other legal career paths, arbitral work is not limited to locally qualified lawyers. The first semester of the programme emphasises international arbitration, covering key topics such as commercial and investment arbitration. Students also undertake a course in private international law, laying a strong foundation for understanding cross-border legal issues. In the second semester, the focus shifts to the theory and practice of ADR methods, including adjudication, mediation, and negotiation. Students will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in a specific area of interest by conducting research and writing a Master’s thesis, further enhancing their expertise.
