Why Take the IELTS?
- Accepted by virtually every university in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Ireland, and by thousands in the USA.
- Required for student visas in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada (SDS pathway).
- A strong band score boosts your admission chances and can unlock scholarships.
- Tests real-life English across all four skills — listening, reading, writing and speaking.
- Results in 3–5 days (computer-based), so you can apply quickly for your intake.
IELTS Exam Pattern & Sections
Listening
Four recordings — everyday conversations and academic discussions — with a range of question types testing your understanding of main ideas, detail and opinion.
Reading
Academic reading uses long texts from books, journals and newspapers. Tests skimming, scanning, detail and inference across 40 questions.
Writing
Task 1 (150 words) describes a graph, chart or process; Task 2 (250 words) is an essay responding to an argument or problem.
Speaking
A face-to-face interview: introduction and interview, a long-turn cue card, and a two-way discussion. Assessed on fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.
IELTS Scoring System & How It Is Calculated
IELTS is scored on a 9-band scale. You receive a band for each of the four sections, and these are averaged into an Overall Band Score. Bands can be whole (6.0) or half (6.5).
| Score | Level | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Band 9 | Expert User | Fully operational command of English — accurate, fluent and complete understanding. |
| Band 8 | Very Good User | Fully operational command with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies. |
| Band 7 | Good User | Operational command, though with occasional inaccuracies and misunderstandings. |
| Band 6 | Competent User | Generally effective command despite some inaccuracies — the typical requirement. |
| Band 5 | Modest User | Partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations. |
Your Overall Band Score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. For example, Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 5.0 and Speaking 7.0 average to 6.25, which rounds up to an Overall Band of 6.5. Most universities ask for an overall 6.0–7.0 with no individual band below 5.5–6.0.
IELTS Exam Dates, Registration & Fees
The IELTS is held throughout the year, so you can choose a date that fits your application timeline. Registration is done online through the official test provider, and seats fill quickly in peak intake months — so book early. The IELTS fee in India is approximately ₹17,000 (approx.).
Vibedu helps you pick the best test date, register correctly, and prepare a study plan that works backward from your university deadlines — completely free.
