- Valid for 5 years — plan your applications with flexibility.
GRE Exam Pattern & Sections
Verbal Reasoning
Reading comprehension, text completion and sentence equivalence — testing vocabulary and analysis of written material.
Quantitative Reasoning
Arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis problems, including quantitative comparisons and word problems.
Analytical Writing
The "Analyze an Issue" essay, where you build and support an argument on a given topic.
GRE Scoring System & How It Is Calculated
The GRE gives a Verbal score and a Quantitative score, each from 130 to 170 (combining to 260–340), plus an Analytical Writing score from 0 to 6.
| Score | Level | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 325 – 340 | Excellent | Top percentile — competitive for the most selective universities. |
| 315 – 324 | Very Good | Strong score accepted by most top-ranked programs. |
| 305 – 314 | Good | Meets the requirement of many good universities. |
| 300 – 304 | Average | Accepted by a range of universities; aim higher for funding. |
| AWA 4.0+ | Strong Writing | A 4.0+ Analytical Writing score is expected by most programs. |
Your total GRE score (260–340) is the sum of your Verbal (130–170) and Quantitative (130–170) scaled scores. Analytical Writing is reported separately on a 0–6 scale. Scores are based on the number of correct answers, converted to a scaled score. Most competitive programs look for 310–325+, with STEM courses weighting the Quant score heavily.

The GRE is held throughout the year, so you can choose a date that fits your application timeline. Registration is done online through the official test provider, and seats fill quickly in peak intake months — so book early. The GRE fee in India is approximately $220 (approx.).
