Note four things only
- Was — what is happening or changing.
- Wann — time, day, date.
- Wo — platform, room, place.
- Die Änderung — what has changed from what was expected. This is nearly always the question.
An announcement usually exists because something changed. The original detail is stated and then superseded, and the option matching the first thing you heard is the distractor.
Numbers, which decide most of these
- German says two-digit numbers back to front — *vierundzwanzig* is four-and-twenty, 24.
- Times use *halb* for the half hour before: *halb acht* is 7:30, not 8:30.
- *Viertel vor* and *Viertel nach* — quarter to and quarter past.
- Platform and room numbers come fast and are not repeated.
*Halb acht* is the single most reliable trap in German listening for English speakers, because the logic is the opposite of "half eight".
