We haven't confirmed this year's application window, and these dates move every cycle — so we won't print one. The official page is the only reliable source. Ask us and we'll track it for you and tell you when it opens.
Eligibility
German is the gate most applicants do not expect: at least B2 or DSH1 is required, and it is not waived for English-taught programmes. Past that, international students who took their first degree abroad may apply before starting a Master's in Germany, and priority goes to applicants from DAC countries who have not yet taken up residence in Germany at the time of applying — India qualifies on both counts. Doctoral candidates are supported where they are enrolled at a state-recognised German university. The Foundation also asks for something unusual and assesses it rather than assuming it: active commitment to its Green project — democracy, ecology, solidarity and non-violence — and a demonstrated socio-political role.
Two deadlines a year, 1 March and 1 September, so missing one costs six months rather than a year. Graduate funding is means-tested against parental income or your own assets and earnings, so the figure is not flat and two scholars on the same programme may receive different amounts.
