How Indian students can work in the USA after graduation — OPT, the STEM extension and the H-1B route — explained simply.

OPT — your first year of work

Optional Practical Training (OPT) lets F-1 graduates work in the USA for up to 12 months in a role related to their degree. Most students use it to gain experience straight after graduating.

STEM OPT — up to 3 years total

If your degree is in an eligible STEM field, you can extend OPT by 24 more months — three years of work in total. This is a major reason so many Indian students choose STEM programs in the USA.

H-1B — the longer-term work visa

To stay beyond OPT, most graduates move to the H-1B work visa, sponsored by an employer. H-1B is subject to an annual lottery and cap, so it’s competitive — but the STEM OPT window gives you up to three years to secure it.

From H-1B to a Green Card
