IELTS Band Requirements by Country (2026)

What IELTS band do you actually need for the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and more? A quick country-by-country guide for Indian students.

It depends on the country and course

Most universities ask for an overall IELTS band of 6.0–7.0, often with a minimum in each section. Higher-ranked universities and courses like law, medicine and teaching typically want more.

Typical requirements

UK: 6.0–7.0 overall. USA: 6.5–7.0 (often with the GRE). Canada: 6.0–6.5. Australia and New Zealand: 6.0–6.5. Ireland: around 6.5. Always check the specific course — the band can vary within a country.

Section minimums matter

Many universities require no band below 6.0 (or 6.5), so a strong overall score with one weak section can still fall short. Practise your weakest module.

Can you skip IELTS?
