GRE or GMAT? The right choice depends on your course and target schools. Here’s a simple way to decide.
What each test is for
The GRE is a general graduate admissions test accepted for a wide range of master’s programs. The GMAT is designed for business school and MBA admissions. Many business schools now accept both — so your course and target schools decide.
Choose the GRE if…
You’re applying to a non-MBA master’s (engineering, computer science, data science, sciences), or you want flexibility to apply to both technical and business programs.
Choose the GMAT if…
You’re focused on MBA programs, especially at schools that prefer or emphasise it, and you’re strong on data and logic — the GMAT is built around business reasoning.
Do you even need one?
A growing number of programs waive the GRE/GMAT, especially with strong academics or work experience. UK master’s usually don’t require either. Always check each program.
