A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a special German bank account where you deposit a fixed sum to prove you can cover your living costs. The money is “blocked” and released to you in equal monthly instalments after you arrive — it’s your money, not a fee.

How much do you need?

The required amount is set by the German authorities and is currently around €11,904 for one year (roughly €992 per month). Always check the current figure before you apply, as it is revised periodically.

How to open one

Several providers offer blocked accounts online for international students. You open the account, transfer the required amount, and receive confirmation to submit with your visa application.
