Can you fund your studies abroad without pledging property? Yes — here’s how collateral-free education loans work for Indian students.
Collateral vs non-collateral loans
A secured loan is backed by an asset (property, FD, or securities), while a collateral-free loan is not. Non-collateral loans are faster and don’t risk your family’s assets, but usually come with higher interest and a lower maximum amount.
Who offers them
Public banks, private banks and NBFCs all offer collateral-free education loans up to a certain limit. International lenders also fund students at specific universities without Indian collateral or a co-signer, based on your admit and future earning potential.
What lenders look at
Your university and course ranking, your academic record, and often a co-applicant’s income. A strong admit to a reputed university makes approval easier and rates lower.
Interest, moratorium and tax
Expect a moratorium (repayment holiday) during study plus a few months after, and a tax benefit on the interest under Section 80E. Compare the total cost, not just the rate.
