How education loan interest rates work for study abroad — secured vs unsecured, what affects your rate, and how to get the lowest one.
What affects your rate
Your interest rate depends on whether the loan is secured (collateral) or unsecured, the lender, your university and course, the loan amount, and your co-applicant’s profile. Secured loans usually carry lower rates than unsecured ones.
Secured vs unsecured
Public-sector banks offer the lowest rates on secured loans but process slower; private banks and NBFCs offer faster, collateral-free loans at higher rates. See education loan without collateral.
Look at the total cost
Compare the effective rate, processing fees, moratorium terms and the tax benefit on interest (Section 80E) — not just the headline rate. A slightly higher rate with better terms can be cheaper overall.
