What is the Duolingo English Test?

The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online, at-home English test that’s cheaper and faster than IELTS or TOEFL, with results in a couple of days. It has grown popular since universities began accepting it more widely.

Where it’s accepted

Many universities in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia and Ireland now accept the DET for admission. However, acceptance is university-specific and it is not always accepted for visa purposes — check both the university and the visa authority.

DET vs IELTS/PTE

DET wins on cost, speed and convenience; IELTS and PTE are more universally accepted, including for visas. If your target universities accept DET and you don’t need IELTS for the visa, DET can save time and money — otherwise, stick with IELTS or PTE.
