A clear, realistic breakdown of what it costs an Indian student to study in the USA in 2026 — tuition, living, insurance and one-time costs — and how to fund it.
The short answer
For most Indian students, a two-year master’s in the USA works out to roughly ₹60 lakh to ₹1.3 crore all-in, and an undergraduate degree more, depending on the university, city and course. That range is wide because US universities vary enormously — a public state university can cost less than half of a private one. Tuition fees
Postgraduate tuition typically runs $22,000–$55,000 per year; undergraduate can be similar or higher. STEM and business programs at top universities sit at the upper end. Public universities and less-famous private ones offer strong education at lower cost — often the smartest value.
Living costs
Budget roughly $1,300–$1,800 a month depending on the city. New York, the Bay Area and Boston are expensive; the Midwest and South are far cheaper. Living costs usually add up to as much as, or more than, tuition over the course.
Insurance and one-time costs
US health insurance is mandatory and costs roughly ₹1–1.5 lakh per year. One-time costs — F-1 visa fee, SEVIS, flights, and tests like the GRE, IELTS or TOEFL — typically add about ₹1–1.5 lakh.
How to fund it
Most students combine three things: scholarships and graduate assistantships (which can cut tuition sharply — see scholarships to study abroad), an education loan, and part-time on-campus work. A strong Fall application opens the most funding — read more on USA intakes.
