Tuition, living costs, insurance and visa — a realistic breakdown of what it costs an Indian student to study in the UK in 2026, and how the one-year master’s saves you money.
Why the UK can be cost-effective
The UK looks expensive per year, but most master’s degrees take just one year — versus two in the USA or Australia — so your total tuition and living spend is often lower. A one-year master’s plus the 2-year Graduate Route is a strong-value combination. Estimate your total with our cost calculator.
Tuition fees
Postgraduate tuition typically runs £14,000–£38,000 per year depending on the course and university; business, law and medicine sit at the upper end. Many strong universities outside London cost less.
Living costs
Budget roughly £950–£1,250 a month. London is the most expensive; cities like Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sheffield are considerably cheaper and full of great universities.
Insurance and one-time costs
The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) gives you access to the NHS and is paid with your visa. Add the visa fee, flights and IELTS — roughly ₹1–1.5 lakh in one-time costs.
Funding it
Scholarships like Chevening and university awards, plus an education loan, cover most students. See timing on UK intakes and the full picture in our Study in the UK guide.
