TOEFL

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL™) it is the standardized test that evaluates the English skills of applicants, whose mother tongue is not English. It tests North American English language skills. The majority of educational institutions in the United States and Canada (about 2400) request TOEFL scores from applicants. The TOEFL test is used or required by most applicants as a prerequisite for entry to colleges or universities. Moreover, a wide range of government agencies, licensing, certification agencies and scholarship and exchange programs are using TOEFL scores for assessing people for whom the English language is not their mother tongue.

Two TOEFL test formats are available. It depends on the size of your test center and where you are located. The TOEFL iBT test is used by most test users. The Paper-based Test (PBT) offers test centers without Internet access. TOEFL iBT is carried out in several test centers across the country in India. Every year, almost a million people at all ages take the TOEFL test to show their English skills. Since it was offered, TOEFL has been tested by more than 25 million people around the world.

Importance of TOEFL

TOEFL scores are accepted by over 8000 colleges, organizations and other institutions in more than 130 countries. Here are some organization relies on TOEFL score.

  • Departments of immigration use TOEFL score to issue visas for residence and work
  • Licensing agency and Medical use these for the purposes of professional certification
  • People use them to measure their progress in English

Test Pattern

The TOEFL iBT test is conducted in English and online. It takes a total of four and a half hours to complete four sections (reading, speaking, Listening and writing), and each section is taken online. Speaking and writing are integrated tasks because they include reading and listening tasks before answering questions. There are a total of 120.

Test Pattern

Reading

Three or four reading passages are included in the reading section. 12 to 14 questions are asked per passage. All questions in this section are answered in 60 to 80 minutes.

Passages from TOEFL iBT reading are excerpts from textbooks of university standards. There are several different subjects covered in the passages. Don’t worry if the subject of a passage is unfamiliar to you. You will receive all of the information needed to answer the questions.

 

Listening

The Hearing section contains test questions concerning academic lectures and lengthy conversations that sound very natural to speak. During the entire test, you can take notes on any listening material. The test consists of 4 to 6 lectures, for 3 to 5 minutes, each lecture embraced with 6 questions, total duration 60 to 90 minutes and 3 conversation tasks each carry 5 questions and time duration is 60 to 90 minutes.

 

Speaking

Your recorded responses are forwarded in a 0 to 4 scale holistic score to the ETS Scoring Network, with three to six certified human raters. In the six tasks score average is converted into a 0 to 30 score.

They don’t expect your answers to be optimal and even high-scoring answers could sometimes contain mistakes. You don’t have to sound like that of an English native speaker. The raters listen to your communication’s efficiency and your ability to perform the tasks.

 

Writing

The written section has a total time of 50 minutes. You must write answers to two tasks: an integrated writing task and an independent writing task. The integrated task is to read a short passage and to hear a short lecture. Then write in answer to what you have read and heard. Independent Writing consists of writing an essay in response to a writing topic.
