Master the GMAT: Your Complete Guide to Success
Everything you need to know about the Graduate Management Admission Test
What is GMAT
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a computer-adaptive standardized test used by business schools worldwide as part of the admissions process for MBA and other graduate management programs. Administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the GMAT assesses analytical writing, quantitative, verbal, and integrated reasoning skills that are critical for success in business school.
The GMAT is specifically designed to measure skills that are important in business and management programs. Over 7,000 programs at approximately 2,300 business schools accept GMAT scores. The test takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete (including breaks) and is available at test centers worldwide and as an online proctored exam. Unlike the GRE, the GMAT is specifically tailored for business school applicants.
GMAT Test Structure
The GMAT consists of four main sections: Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA), Integrated Reasoning (IR), Quantitative Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning. The test begins with the Analytical Writing Assessment where you analyze an argument. The Integrated Reasoning section measures your ability to evaluate information presented in multiple formats from multiple sources.
The Quantitative section tests problem-solving abilities and data sufficiency questions using arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. The Verbal section evaluates reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction skills. The GMAT is computer-adaptive at the question level for the Quantitative and Verbal sections, meaning the difficulty of subsequent questions depends on your performance on previous questions.
GMAT Scoring System
The GMAT Total Score ranges from 200 to 800 and is based on your performance in the Quantitative and Verbal sections. The AWA section is scored separately on a scale of 0-6 in half-point increments. The Integrated Reasoning section is scored from 1-8 in single-digit increments. The Quantitative and Verbal sections each have scaled scores ranging from 6-51.
Your official score report will include all section scores along with percentile rankings. GMAT scores are valid for five years. Most business schools focus primarily on the Total Score (200-800 range) when evaluating applications, though some programs may have minimum requirements for specific sections. You'll receive your unofficial scores immediately after completing the test, with official scores available within 7-20 days.
Test Dates & Locations
The GMAT is available year-round at test centers worldwide, with appointments available six days a week (excluding holidays). The online GMAT is available 24/7 with scheduling flexibility. You can take the GMAT up to five times in a rolling 12-month period, with a maximum of eight lifetime attempts. There must be at least 16 days between test attempts.
Test appointments can be scheduled online through the GMAC website. The GMAT is offered in over 650 test centers across 114 countries. The test fee is $275 worldwide (prices may vary slightly by country). Rescheduling fees apply if you change your test date within 7 days of your appointment. The GMAT Online option is available in most locations except Mainland China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Sudan.
GMAT Preparation Tips
Effective GMAT preparation typically requires 2-3 months of dedicated study. Begin by taking an official GMAT practice test to establish your baseline score. Focus on mastering fundamental math concepts for the Quantitative section and developing critical reasoning skills for the Verbal section. For Integrated Reasoning, practice interpreting data from multiple sources.
Use official GMAC preparation materials as they most accurately reflect the actual test. Create a structured study plan that allocates time based on your weaknesses. Take several full-length practice tests under timed conditions to build endurance. On test day, arrive early, bring valid identification, and use the optional 8-minute breaks strategically. Remember that you cannot skip questions or return to previous questions on the GMAT.

When to Choose GMAT
- You're only applying to business programs
- You're stronger in logic than vocabulary
- You excel at data sufficiency problems
- Your target schools emphasize GMAT
- You're competing for merit-based scholarships
When to Choose GRE
- You're considering non-business graduate programs
- You have a strong vocabulary
- You prefer more straightforward math questions
- You want section-select flexibility
- You need to test sooner with less preparation
While schools claim equal acceptance of GMAT and GRE, some admissions officers privately acknowledge that a strong GMAT score may carry slightly more weight, as it's a more proven predictor of MBA success. However, this gap is narrowing each year.

GMAT Frequently Asked Questions
GMAT scores are valid for five years from your test date. For example, if you took the GMAT on June 1, 2023, your score would be valid through June 1, 2028. Most business schools will not accept scores older than five years. Your score report will show the expiration date, and you can send official score reports to schools anytime during this validity period.
Yes, you have two options for canceling your GMAT score:
- Immediately after the test: Before seeing your unofficial scores, you can cancel at the test center. This is free.
- Within 72 hours: You can cancel online for a $25 fee. You'll need your authentication code from the test center.
Cancelled scores don't appear on your official record sent to schools. You can reinstate a cancelled score within 4 years and 11 months for a $50 fee.
A "good" GMAT score depends on your target schools:
- Top 10 Programs (HBS, Stanford, Wharton): 730+ (90th percentile+)
- Top 25 Programs: 700+ (88th percentile)
- Top 50 Programs: 650+ (73rd percentile)
- Regional Programs: 600+ (56th percentile)
However, schools consider your entire application. A slightly lower score with strong other components may be competitive. Our advisors can help you determine target scores based on your specific goals.
The GMAT has the following attempt limits:
- Maximum in 12 months: 5 attempts
- Lifetime limit: 8 attempts total
- Waiting period between attempts: 16 calendar days
All attempts count toward these limits, including cancellations. If you reach the limit but need to retake, you can request an exception by contacting GMAC customer service, though approvals are rare.
The difficulty depends on your strengths:
GMAT Challenges
- More advanced quantitative concepts
- Faster pacing requirements
- Computer-adaptive by question
- Integrated Reasoning section
- Data Sufficiency questions
GRE Challenges
- More extensive vocabulary
- Broader range of math topics
- Longer test duration
- More reading-intensive
- Less predictable question patterns
Most students find one test plays more to their natural strengths. We recommend taking a practice test of each to compare performance.
The GMAT is one of the most important components of your MBA application:
- Academic Indicator: Schools use it to predict your ability to handle quantitative coursework
- Comparison Tool: Allows comparison of candidates from different backgrounds
- Rankings Factor: Affects school rankings, so they care about average scores
- Scholarship Consideration: Higher scores often lead to more scholarship offers
That said, it's not the only factor. A strong GMAT can compensate for weaker areas, while a weaker GMAT can be offset by exceptional work experience, recommendations, or essays.
